I searched the Internet for lists of the best or greatest movies of the 1990s. Criteria included the movies being ranked, not just listed, and generally created by groups, whether teams or committees or based on general public voting (like Ranker.com).

I was able to find 38 lists. I took the 38 lists and added all their content into a spreadsheet, noting the rank of every film. I ended up averaging the rankings each movie got (there were 353 that were on at least 2 lists) and dividing that average by a factor of the number of lists that movie was on. The lowest score meant a high ranking average on many lists. The complete spreadsheet is attached at the bottom.

The movies that were on the most lists (out of 38) were:

  • Pulp Fiction (1994) – 37 lists
  • Goodfellas (1990) – 34 lists
  • The Silence of the Lambs (1991) – 32 lists
  • Schindler’s List (1993) – 29 lists
  • The Matrix (1999) – 28 lists
  • Fargo (1996) – 28 lists
  • The Shawshank Redemption (1994) – 26 lists
  • Fight Club (1999) – 26 lists
  • Jurassic Park (1993) – 25 lists
  • The Lion King (1994) – 25 lists
  • Toy Story (1995) – 25 lists
  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) – 24 lists
  • Titanic (1997) – 23 lists
  • Groundhog Day (1993) – 22 lists
  • Boogie Nights (1997) – 22 lists
  • Saving Private Ryan (1998) – 21 lists
  • The Big Lebowski (1998) – 20 lists
  • Clueless (1995) – 20 lists
