I searched the Internet for lists of the funniest or best comedy movies of all time. Criteria included the movies being ranked, not just listed, and generally created by groups, whether teams or committees or based on general public voting (like Ranker.com). I ended up including both “funniest movies” lists and “best comedies” lists, even though there’s technically a difference. I figured the blend of the two would produce the best results.

I was able to find 56 lists, which was a vast improvement over the 27 lists I was able to find in 2020. I took the 56 lists and added all their content into a spreadsheet, noting the rank of every film. I then averaged the rankings each movie got (there were 399 that were on at least 2 lists) and divided that average by a factor of the number of lists that movie was on. The lowest score meant a high ranking average on many lists. The complete spreadsheet is attached at the bottom.

The movies that were on the most lists (out of 56):

  • Airplane! (1980) – 47 lists
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) – 42 lists
  • Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) – 34 lists
  • Borat (2006) – 34 lists
  • Groundhog Day (1993) – 33 lists
  • Dr. Strangelove (1964) – 32 lists
  • Superbad (2007) – 31 lists
  • This Is Spinal Tap (1984) – 30 lists
  • Young Frankenstein (1974) – 29 lists
  • Blazing Saddles (1974) – 29 lists
  • The Big Lebowski (1998) – 29 lists
  • Dumb and Dumber (1994) – 29 lists
  • Office Space (1999) – 29 lists
