I searched the Internet for lists of the best sketches from Saturday Night Live. Criteria included the sketches being ranked, not just listed, and generally created by groups, whether teams or committees or based on general public voting (like Ranker.com).

I found 28 different ranked lists online of “best SNL sketches.” Then I averaged the rankings each one got and divided that average by a factor of the number of lists they were on. The lowest score meant a high ranking average on many lists. The complete spreadsheet is attached at the bottom.

The characters that were on the most lists (out of 28):

  • Matt Foley: Van Down by the River – 22 lists
  • More Cowbell (Behind the Music) – 21 lists
  • Debbie Downer: Disney World – 16 lists
  • Chippendales Audition – 16 lists
  • Wayne’s World: Aerosmith – 15 lists
  • Black Jeopardy with Tom Hanks – 14 lists
  • Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood: Nutrition – 13 lists
  • Close Encounter – 12 lists
  • The Delicious Dish: Schwetty Balls – 12 lists
  • Haunted Elevator – 12 lists
