I searched the Internet for lists of the best characters from Saturday Night Live. Criteria included the characters being ranked, not just listed, and generally created by groups, whether teams or committees or based on general public voting (like Ranker.com).

I found 18 different ranked lists online of “best SNL characters.” Then I averaged the rankings each one got and divided that average by a factor of the number of lists they were on. The lowest score meant a high ranking average on many lists. The complete spreadsheet is attached at the bottom.

The characters that were on the most lists (out of 18):

  • Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar (Wayne’s World)
  • Matt Foley
  • The Church Lady
  • Stefon
  • Debbie Downer
  • The Festrunk Brothers (Two Wild and Crazy Guys)
  • Keyrock, Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer
  • Mr. Robinson
  • Hans and Franz
  • The Blues Brothers
